The Shekou Theatre Festival, organized by China Merchants Culture Industry & Performing Arts Connection, is centered around the theme of "site-specific," with a primary emphasis on the incubation. It comprises five main sections: Theatre in Situ,' 'New Writing,' 'Theatre in Situ International.Fourm' , 'Special Stage' and 'Extensional Event'.The public calls for proposals of Theatre in Situ projects and New Writing projects begin in April, followed by creative workshops in June, the incubation period in July, and culminates in performances in November, spanning eight months in total.
Shekou Theatre Festival has incubated 31 Theatre in Situ projects and 9 original playscripts, alongside hosting 374 performances in the last two editions since 2022. Additionally, it has selected 10 papers on Theatre in Situ and published a special issue of G.D. ART. The festival has successfully established a platform for performing arts incubation, supporting numerous talented young creators and gathering an audience primarily consisting of young people. Not only does the Shekou Theatre Festival showcase artistic innovation and vitality within the city, but it also received mass attention on social media.

Unlike many other arts festivals that primarily feature invited performances, the Shekou Theatre Festival is centered around the theme of "site-specific," with a primary emphasis on the incubation.
The decision to take such a challenging path was made in response to the disruption of international arts and culture exchanges by the pandemic in 2022. During the planning meetings, Crystal D., one member of the jury, proposed, "When the borders reopen, what can we offer to the world?" To answer this question, the Shekou Theatre Festival boldly shifted its focus to young creators, initiating the Incubation Projects, assembling a jury panel, establishing selection criteria, and providing resources and platforms.
