The story opens with the performance of The Macau Merchant about to begin, only to be abruptly interrupted by a couple from the audience. Dissatisfied with the script, they insist that their employee, Lei Feihu, take the stage in the role of ‘The General of the Burning Pestle’. As a result, two narrative threads unfold simultaneously on stage: one centers on the themes of love and elopement within The Macau Merchant, while the other follows the absurd military exploits of Lei Feihu, now cast as ‘The General of the Burning Pestle’. The couple repeatedly intervenes, compelling Lei Feihu to perform various ‘general's tasks’. These interwoven episodes give rise to a series of misunderstandings and comedic mishaps that escalate throughout the performance.
